Prologue[]

The game starts off one week prior. In a small rural town located in the outskirts of the mountains, there is a local bathhouse that is quite popular amongst locals and tourists alike. An old man (who is the owner of the bathhouse and the landlord of a nearby apartment complex) is seen talking to the bathhouse attendant at the front booth. He complements her for her hard work for the day and tells her to go and clean the saunas for the night. The landlord tells her to go to the cleaning supply closet to get a bucket, and upon entering the sauna, she will collect and put away the towels from there. After the landlord leaves the bathhouse, the attendant heads out of the booth to do her nightly tasks.

Upon entering the sauna, she starts grabbing some of the towels. But all of a sudden, the door behind her slams shut, and the lights in the sauna suddenly start flickering! Freaking out, the bathhouse attendant starts breathing heavily as she attempts to open the door, but the door remained locked. All of a sudden, the floor starts growing hair, and a loud growling sound is heard. But then, the noises stop. Shocked and confused, the bathhouse attendant stands still, breathing heavily while wondering what is happening around her. But upon looking behind, she discovers that an Onryō was right behind her, and she is attacked off-camera.

After the screen cuts to black, we then see the perspective of someone taking a bath. Turns out, this is the main protagonist, Maina Akimura who is simply washing herself until her cellphone starts ringing. Upon answering it, the person on the other end just so happens to be someone that Maina knows from the orphanage she graduated from. The person lets her know that she has been offered a job at their bathhouse in the countryside and that they can live in a nearby apartment complex, rent-free. Feeling like the city-life is not for her, Maina decides to pack up her bags and start a new life.

Day 1[]

On a dark and stormy night, Maina arrives in town and is ready to start her new life in the countryside. Maina decides to go to her new apartment to get settle in. While walking down the street, Maina takes notice of a woman who is praying at the entrance of the bathhouse. Not only that, but she also sees various shops, a temple, various posters, advertisements, and even a wanted poster for a man named "Toru Marushima". Eventually, Maina arrives at the apartment complex. (Which was luckily was not too much of a long walk), and upon entering the grounds, she notices a shady man who strangely shares a great resemblance to the man on the wanted poster. Unfazed by this, Maina heads upstairs to Apartment #202. Despite the fact she was told earlier that the door to the apartment would be unlocked, she discovers that the door is locked. Confused on what to do, Maina decides to head back downstairs to find someone that could help her. But just as she turned around, she hears the sound of a door unlocking and turns back around and notices that an old man had just walked out of the apartment. Turns out, it is the landlord, who happily greets her. He decides to make small talk with Maina, he lets her know that the bathhouse is across from the apartment complex and even asks her about her age. Before leaving, the landlord gives Maina the key to her new apartment and he gives her a heads up that while the apartment may be old, the interior still looks nice. After that, Maina enters the apartment and quickly takes notice that the apartment is not what the landlord told her. The apartment is very filthy, so Maina decides to clean up the apartment before heading to the bathhouse. After placing her suitcase down, she takes notice that there are scratch marks on the floor. So Maina decides to move the closet to cover it up, but after doing so, she takes notice that there is a hole in the wall behind where the closet was placed. Maina takes a peek through the hole and see what's in there. She discovers that she can see through the apartment next to her, but it is desolated. Despite the furniture it seemed as if no one has been living in there for some time. After that, Maina picks up some of the empty bottles and an old newspaper and places them in the trash bin before taking it to the trash area near the apartment. Once done, Maina decides to go to the bathhouse to start her new job.

Upon entering, the landlord greets Maina at the reception desk and gives her the basics on what she has to do. The landlord pretends to be a customer as he explains the order on what Maina must do before she can check in the customer into the bathhouse.

  1. Maina will take the money from the customer.
  2. The customer will then tell Maina what they need before entering their respective bathing area. Maina will then place those items in the basket.
    • The items that are included are as follows:
      • Towels
      • Shampoos
      • Shavers
      • Wet Wipes
      • Body Wash
  3. If at any point the items start to become low on stock, Maina can restock them by unpacking the boxes next to her at the reception desk.
  4. Maina can use the monitor above the counter to switch cameras so she can check on the customers. (Or the different areas within the bathhouse).

Once Maina finishes that part of the training, the landlord will then teach Maina how to work the boiler rooms in case if anybody complains about the water temperature. So, the two head down to the basement where there are two boilers (one for the male bathing area, and the other for the female side) and a pile of firewood. The landlord then explains what Maina has to do:

  1. The temperature of the water is shown through a meter, with three different color indicators to show the range from low to high temperature. (Yellow, Orange, and Red). The temperature should normally be kept within the orange area.
  2. To add more heat, Maina can add firewood from the pile to the respective boiler.
  3. To decrease the heat, Maina can lower the lever on the respective boiler.
  4. Only the firewood can be placed in the boilers, anything else will cause it to smell.
  5. Make sure to check on the customers regularly to see if they are okay with the temperature of the water. This will be indicated by going up to them where an emoji will be shown above them, displaying if they are ok with the temperature or not.
  6. Maina can also check on the meter by using the aforementioned monitor at the counter.

Now with that done, the landlord teaches Maina the final part of the training. They return back up to the main floor and the landlord teaches her how to clean up the place.

  1. When the closing music plays, it is time to start cleaning the bathhouse for the night. Each night will have a different task for Maina to do.
  2. To get the necessary supplies to do the task, Maina can head over to the supply closet on the men's changing area to grab either the drain hook and/or the broom.
  3. Once grabbed, Maina will then perform the task that is needed to be done, and then she can close the bathhouse for the night.

*As a heads up, if at any point there is a mess within the bathhouse during the middle of the shift, Maina is required to clean it up.*

Once the training is complete, the landlord will give Maina one final instruction before taking his leave: There are rules that every customer must follow while bathing in the bathhouse. If any one of them were to break them, Maina will have to ask them to leave. She can find the rules pinned on the board behind where she stands at the counter. And with that, the training is complete, and the landlord wishes Maina the best of luck for her first day at the bathhouse. He also tells her before leaving that he'll come back before its time to clean up to see how well she did.

*It is also important to note that on the top right corner of the screen is a three-strike system. If Maina were to do something incorrectly, they will receive an X.*

The following scenarios that can make Maina receive one are as follows:

  • Making a customer wait too long.
  • Failing to inform and kick a customer out for breaking the rules.
  • Giving an incorrect item.
  • Failing to change the temperature on time if a customer starts to complain.
  • Incorrectly kicking out a customer if they didn't break the rules.

By the end of the shift, depending on how you do, the landlord will either be impressed, or unamazed by Maina's performance level that day.

Day 1 at the Bathhouse:[]

*This guide is for any players wondering how to achieve a perfect score for day one. Customers indicated by an Astrid and have bolded text are rule breakers. Specific events will also be provided with each customer within the guide. Please also note that the items the customers will ask for will be randomize each time.*

Chores/Tasks:[]

  • Mop the floors as some customers will leave puddles on the floor.
  • The inventory of items will be knocked down at some point, so you will have to reshelve them.
  • One of the hair dryers on the women's changing area will turn on at some point, so turn it off when you hear it running.
  • One of the message chairs in the men's changing area will turn on so turn it off when you hear/notice it is running.

Customers:[]

The first customer that Maina greets is a man named Fuuta, who greets her and makes small talk about how the bathhouse seems to give an off-putting vibe to it.

  • Fuuta will follow the rules, so you don't need to kick him out.

* The second customer is a man with a red mohawk who comes in seconds after Fuuta. The man is no-where near friendly to Maina, as after he asks her if she started the job recently, Maina doesn't respond. To which the man makes sexist remarks, claiming a man should be working at the reception desk instead.

  • The man is a rule breaker as he will sexual harass Fuuta upon entering the bathing area. This is indicated by Fuuta's loud shouting.

After kicking the man out, Fuuta decides to leave too as he was unhappy with what he just experienced. (You won't receive a penalty for this).

The third and fourth customer are a pair of old women named Chiyo and Miyo who are regulars at the bathhouse. They are polar opposites as Chiyo greets Maina with open arms while Miyo immediately takes a disliking towards her and claims she doesn't fit here at all. Chiyo points out to Maina on how she looks familiar to the previous bathhouse employee who worked at the place. But she disappeared years ago and hasn't been seen since then.

  • Both Chiyo and Miyo follow the rules, so you don't need to kick them out.

The fifth customer is Rei who takes a keen interest in Maina and wants to find out where she lives so he can visit her.

  • Rei will strangely disappear after that.

The sixth customer is businesswoman who works in the city. She lets Maina know as a head up that she has to work hard for this community and to not get ahead of herself. When Maina doesn't respond, the woman gets annoyed and calls her inconsiderate as she works a hard life compared to Maina. She also berates her for letting an unknown woman to bathe here who she claims to be very filthy.

  • The woman follows the rules, so you don't need to kick her out.

* The seventh customer is a teenage girl with a dark gray hoodie. She makes small talk with Maina on how hot guys hang out at a bathhouse like this. Not only that, but she also feels infatuated of the idea of an attractive man sharing the women's side of the bathhouse.

  • The teenager is a rule breaker as she is wearing her bathing suit into the bathing area and is wearing a pool floatie along with her.

* The eighth customer is a woman in a black jacket. She comments on the fact that her boss told her about Maina and can see why Maina was hired in the first place.

  • The woman is a rule breaker as she has tattoos on her body.

The ninth and final customer(s) is a mother and son. Maina asks the mother if her son is under the age of seven. But the woman points out that a child can be within the woman's bathing area if they are under seven, regardless of gender, and to be mindful of the rules next time.

  • They both follow the rules within the bathhouse, so you don't need to kick them out.

After Maina notices the mother leaving, the closing music plays, and the landlord comes in to tell Maina how well she did. After that, Maina will be tasked to drain and clean the bathtubs before she can take a bath. Maina goes over to the supply closet and grabs the drain hook, but when she goes over the men's bathing area, the boy from earlier pops out! He warns Maina that there is a spirit within the bathhouse and to be careful. Maina tells the boy that his mother left him, but this left him confused as he claims he doesn't have a mom...and after that, the boy quickly leaves the place.

Unbothered by this, Maina continues with her duties. Once she finishes the men's bathing area, Maina heads over to the woman's side. During the middle of cleaning, she hears the voice of a woman who asks for assistance. Maina presumes it's a customer and tells her the place is closed for the night. But the woman tells her that she's also an employee who is also cleaning up the place. She asks Maina to throw a bucket to her as there isn't enough on the women's side. After tossing a bucket to the other side, the woman thanks her and Maina will continue to clean up. Once she's done, she'll take her shower.

Maina will sit down at a nearby shower and start cleaning herself, but upon doing so, strange things start to happen around the place. She first hears footsteps and sees a naked man walking behind her in the reflection of the mirror. But upon looking around, there is no one in sight. After finishing her shower, Maina turns around and notices that a monkey is running loose around the bathhouse. And upon getting up, the place has suddenly become dark. So Maina decides to investigate what's going on. She follows the same monkey all the way to the men's bathing area where discovers that a troop of monkeys have gather around the shower area. Upon closer inspection, Maina finds the corpse of Rei, who's body is completely pale, and hair suddenly comes out of his mouth before slithering away! The monkeys then begin to screech and jump around like crazy. After that, the screen goes black and the day ends.

Day 2[]

The next morning, Maina wakes up to get ready for work. She wonders what exactly happened yesterday at the bathhouse as she gets up from the futon she was sleeping on. Before heading out, Maina decides whether or not to take a peek through the hole again to see the neighboring apartment. Regardless of her choice nothing has changed in there. Leaving her apartment, Maina starts to make her way to the bathhouse. She notices a woman trying to get into Apartment 203, despite her struggles, Maina cannot interact, nor help her out. Leaving her be, Maina makes her way down the stairs and enters the bathhouse.

The landlord greets Maina and apologize for the behavior from Rei as he believes that he had too much to drink. Even though it's a common thing for most people his age would do while visiting the place, he wishes it would stop. After that, Maina then brings up that monkeys were roaming around in the bathhouse the previous day. To which the landlord tells her not to worry about it, since it is a common sight to see within the countryside. He tells Maina that her task to do after closing the bathhouse is to clean the walls, and she can find the scrubber and spray cleaner in the supply closet. Before the landlord leaves, he informs Maina that his friend Keiichi (who is a regular) will be visiting the place. He describes Keiichi as a "stern-looking" man and wears a suit, and if she sees him, let him in.

Day 2 at the Bathhouse:[]

*This guide is for any players wondering how to achieve a perfect score for day two. Customers indicated by an Astrid and have bolded text are rule breakers. Specific events will also be provided with each customer within the guide. Please also note that the items the customers will ask for will be randomize each time.*

Achievements:[]

  • Get outta here!

The player can obtain an achievement by heading to the woman's changing area and opening the bathroom door. In there, she discovers Fuuta hiding inside, claiming the place is haunted, and that the boy she saw yesterday was killed in the bathhouse. He tries to convince her to leave with him, but Maina tells him that she won't because of her job. So Fuuta quickly runs out of the bathroom and leaves the place.

Chores/Tasks:[]

  • Mop the floors as some customers will leave puddles on the floor.
  • When the inventory runs low, you will have to restock them.
  • One of the jukeboxes on the men's changing area will turn on at some point, so turn it off when you hear it playing.

Customers:[]

The first customer that Maina greets is a woman, who complains on how Maina is too slow at her job and that she can do the job quicker than her.

  • She follows the rules, so you don't need to kick her out.

The second customer is a young man. The man is shown to be quite flirty with Maina, but sexist and perverted too. He tells Maina to lose some weight so she can be more popular. He even asks her if she knows how to cook, (as she is woman), and claims she needs to be good at other things most common housewives are. Before taking his bath, he asks Maina to be his girlfriend, to which she passes.

  • The man follows the rules, so you don't need to kick him out.

However, something strange happens after Maina checks the man in. After he undresses and finishes showering, the man walks over to the entrance to the boiler room and stands in front of it. But the thing is, he seems to be entranced by it, and his facial expression and demeanor is different compared to earlier. As he is heavily breathing, slightly hunched over and is frowning. After some time, he starts walking out of the place like that of a zombie and leaves the place without even changing.

* The third customer is a bald man, who makes small talk with Maina on how business is running slow today and wishes that there were more people coming in.

  • The man is a rule breaker as he will start photographs of the place as he enters the bathing area.

Upon telling him to leave, the man decides to quickly snap one more photo on his camera. But looking over at the picture he just took, he notices something in the picture that freaks him out. He shouts for whoever he is seeing to stay away from him before quickly leaving the place.

* The fourth customer is a middle-aged woman by the name of Denko. She expresses jealousy over the fact that Maina was hired instead of her when she applied. She believes Maina won't be capable to handle the job and will quit sooner or later.

  • Denko is a rule breaker, as she dyes her hear in the bathing area. (If you kick her out while she is in the middle of dying her hair, you will have to clean the mess).

The fifth customer is an African Japanese man. He is quite shy, as he was about to ask Maina something but decides to forget about it.

  • The man follows the rules, so you don't need to kick him out.

After Maina check him in, the man will head to the changing room but stands in a corner while staring in space. When Maina talks to him again, the man finally musters enough courage to finally tell her the last thing he needed. With that being a small Japanese towel. (Maina can obtain one at the counter).

The sixth customer is a girl named Ema Horai "Ema-chi", who is most likely a celebrity. (As she introduces herself like one). She expresses excitement over the fact that she is using a bathhouse again as she has not gone to one in such a long time.

  • Ema follows the rules, so you don't need to kick her out.

If Maina decides to leaver the counter temporarily to check on Ema, Maina will have a paranormal encounter, as she takes notice that a pair of legs are seen standing behind the curtain to the entrance of the woman's changing area. The legs will disappear when Maina gets closer to the curtain.

The seventh customer is a woman with bulging eyes. She is unhappy with Maina's pace and tells her to work faster.

  • The woman follows the rules, so you don't need to kick her out.

* The eighth customer is a little man with a face mask, who expresses excitement that he's using the bathhouse.

  • The man is a rule-breaker, as he goes into the woman's bathing area, pretending to be a child.

The ninth customer is the man who's on the wanted poster: Toru Marushima! He simply gives Maina some money but doesn't request any items before going into the bathing area. Instead, he'll look around the male's changing area for a little bit, before leaving.

  • You can't interact with Toru, nor can you call the police on him, so leave him be.

The tenth customer is a woman with a bucket hat. She questions Maina as to why she is working in a place like this. Regardless of whether Maina tells her or not on why she is working here, the woman will make fun of her for having a "delicate" vibe and questions if she has a partner. Regardless again of the answer, the woman will make fun of her and claims that her partner will be just as worthless as she is.

  • The woman follows the rules, so you don't need to kick her out.

After checking her in, the woman will head straight to the basement door after getting undressed and heads down there. Leaving her hat on the floor in front of the door. When Maina heads down to the basement, the woman is nowhere to be found. However, the next time you go down to the heaters to increase or decrease the temperature, Maina will encounter the spirit of a woman who is standing behind her, before disappearing as she turns around to leave.

The eleventh and final customer is Keiichi. Who greets Maina casually before heading to the bathing area. After getting undressed, Maina discovers that Keiichi is part of the Yakuza, (the leader of one in fact), as he has a large tattoo covering his back. (Since the landlord wants Maina to handle Keiichi like every other customer, Maina can't kick him out).

Keiichi asks Maina to wash his back for him, to which she hesitantly does. Once done, he asks Maina why a person this young like her working at a bathhouse. Regardless of Maina's answer, Keiichi claims that his company owns the place, and he gave permission to the landlord for her to be here. But after seeing her, he has different plans for what she could do for her future and asks Maina to work for his company. But when Maina politely refuses, Keiichi gets infuriated, and yells at her for turning down his offer. He tells her that she has no choice and threatens to make her do so by force. But all of a sudden, something odd happens to Keiichi, as his entire body turns pale and has a bloody nose. He is confused on what's going on and he walks out of the place in a similar way to how the perverted man was walking before. (Though Keiichi puts on his clothes before leaving). At the same time, the sound of ghostly wails and screams are heard in the background.

Once Keiichi leaves, the closing music plays, and the landlord comes in to tell Maina how well she did. After that, he asks Maina how Keiichi was and if anything seemed off to her. Maina lets the landlord know that Keiichi was acting strange when he was about to leave. However, the landlord almost seemed to act indifferent about the situation, seeming as if this was a normal thing that happens to him. Before he leaves, the landlord tells Maina to clean the walls as part of her task tonight, before she takes a shower.

Maina grabs the scrubber and spray cleaner in the supply closet and cleans the wall with no problem or anything strange occurring. Once done, Maina thought she heard the front desk bell ring and decides to go back to check on who it is. But turns out, no one was there, turns out the sound she was hearing was the smoke alarm going off as there is smoke rising out of the boilers. And upon looking through the CCTV, Maina notices that the woman with the bucket hat is down there! (Despite not being there earlier). Maina quickly goes downstairs to check on the situation, and notices that the woman is still standing in the same spot she was in before. But when Maina gets closer, the woman disappears out of thin air! Unfazed, Maina inspects the smoking furnace to find out what's causing this. Turns out, a rosemary bracelet was in there. Not sure what to do, Maina turns around to leave but is greeted by the landlord who is surprised and confused on what happened. After explaining the situation, the landlord tells Maina not to worry about it and go back upstairs to bathe while he fixes the heater.

Maina does so and goes over to the shower to clean herself. But during the middle of it, she hears a voice from somewhere inside the bathhouse. Maina looks around but finds no one, so she continues cleaning herself. But that's when a woman's voice is heard, asking her for her attention. But when Maina looks up, no one is there still. Trying her best to concentrate, Maina continues to cleanse herself, but without warning, she looks up and notices a black figure is kneeling next to her in the mirror! The figure quickly disappears, and Maina finishes her shower as fast as possible, and then heads over to take her bath. Sitting in one of the tubs, Maina tries to relax and have a refreshing bath when all of a sudden, a rubber duck appears in the middle of the water. Just then, the same woman's voice from the previous night is heard calling to Maina. She claims to be the same employee who works here, and requests Maina to throw the rubber duck back to her. (The men's bathing area). Maina does so and then goes back to relaxing. But just when Maina was getting comfortable again, the same rubber duck appeared in the middle of the tub and the same voice called out to her again, but this time, on the woman's bathing area. (The showers). The woman requests Maina to throw the rubber duck back to her, which confuses Maina as she did so only a few seconds ago. After doing so, Maina continues bathing, but once again, the same rubber duck appears in the bathtub, but now with hair covering parts of it. And that's when the same voice calls out to her, requesting Maina to throw her back the duck. (Same side but different area of the showers). Maina does so, and after several seconds, the duck comes back up, but this time with more hair. Maina tries to grab the duck, but the duck consistently goes under before bobbing back up. After several tries, Maina grabs the duck, and that's when a loud low draining sound is heard. And once again, Maina hears the same voice asking for the duck, but this time, the voice is coming from the tub in the corner. Maina does so without saying a word, but after doing so, a batch of hair quickly jumps out of the tub and lands on top of Maina! Shocked and scared by this, Maina hears the sounds of something splashing inside the tub that she is in. And sure enough, she watches helplessly as a woman with long black hair, slowly rises out of the water. After a few seconds, the screen cuts to black.

Then the game shows a cutscene in which a priest is praying from outside the apartments. Then the night ends.

Day 3[]

The next morning, Maina wakes up, but wishes that she didn't have to go to work, mainly due to the paranormal events that occurred since she arrived. As she lays on her futon, with her mind filled with regret on taking this new job, she hears a knock at her door and goes over to see who it is. Turns out, it is the landlord who decided to check up on her. After sitting down, Maina tells the landlord about the events that happened over the past two days. But the landlord responds back with indifference as he claims that it happens from time to time. He explains to Maina that it is mostly common for paranormal occurrences to happen when there are fewer people in an area, especially here in the countryside. But if she feels really concerned about what's been happening, he insists Maina to head over to the nearby shrine and meet the monk there so he can help her out. After wishing her the best, the landlord leaves. Before leaving her apartment, Maina decides to look through the hole in the wall again, and while she doesn't see anything concerning, she does notice the apartment is slightly more damaged than the previous nights. On top of that, long strands of hair are seen draped over the ceiling. After that, Maina leaves her apartment, and heads over to the shrine.

Walking up the steps of the shrine, Maina meets the priest and introduces herself to him. The priest welcomes her and asks Maina if they had met before. Regardless of what Maina tells him, the priest believes they possibly have in the past. Then the priest tells Maina that he can tell that she needs some spiritual help. He senses an evil presence surrounding Maina, with the force growing stronger as soon as she arrived at the village. The priest then blesses Maina and gives her an amulet to help her out before she heads over to the bathhouse to start her shift. After wishing her luck, Maina leaves the place and goes to work.

Going inside, Maina doesn't find the landlord inside the bathhouse. However, a repairman who was called to repair the boilers comes rushing out of the men's changing area. He frantically tells Maina that he is creeped out by the place and informs her that he fixed the boilers. Before leaving, he tells Maina that he will never come back again and quickly walks out of the place. After that, Maina goes over to the front desk and begins her shift.

Day 3 at the Bathhouse:[]

*This guide is for any players wondering how to achieve a perfect score for day three. Customers indicated by an Astrid and have bolded text are rule breakers. But upon checking both sides of the bathhouse, no one is there except for the man and the old woman. However, while looking in the woman's bathing area, Maina spots a spirit hiding inside one of the tubs. But upon getting close to it, the spirit immediately disappears. As the night continues, Maina will continue to hear the scratching noises after every customer she checks in.

He explains to her about their god "Chillatekes" is always next to everyone and that it is more than a god as they keep peace maintained throughout the world. As a result, Chiratekesu helps release their pain and sadness for all of their followers so they can enter a new realm. The Chiratekesu follower offers Maina a chance to join the religion by offering a golden statue of Chillatekes for a million yen. Maina declines the offer as she doesn't have that kind of money, but the follower gets annoyed and warns Maina that she'll regret not joining and will suffer for not accepting the offer.

  • The follower isn't a rule breaker. But he will leave on his own after Maina talks to him again after noticing him holding the statue of Chillatekes within the bathing area. But not before letting Maina know that Chillatekes is upset, and she will suffer an undeniable death.

He tells Maina that she has a deep connection with the village and asks her if she is a local. To which Maina tells him that she recently moved into the village a few days ago. But the man seems to disagree with this. As he continues reading her palm, the man starts telling Maina about her misfortunes and has strong feelings of resentment and love. Completely creeped out by this, Maina tells the man to knock it off to which he does and apologizes to her.

  • The man follows the rules, so you don't need to kick him out.

The sixth customer is Toru Marushima again. Just like with the previous shift, he will simply pay Maina, and he'll look around the male's changing area for a little bit.

  • Just before leaving, Toru introduces himself to Maina and that he is looking for his twin sister. He asks if Maina has any information regarding his long-lost twin. Regardless of the answer, Toru will tell Maina that he knows that his sister lives in the village, but yet, he doesn't know what she looks like. When Maina asks about him on the wanted poster, Toru will tell Maina that he didn't do anything wrong, and it's a set-up, as someone put it up on purpose as they don't think highly of him. Before leaving, he asks Maina that if she has any information regarding his twin, she should let him know.

The seventh customer is an old woman named Matsuno. (The friend of the old woman from earlier and additionally, the woman who was trying to get into her apartment on the second day). She tells Maina how happy she is to see her, as she hasn't changed a bit. (She's referring to her friend, but because she has dementia, Matsuno mistakes Maina for her friend).

  • Matsuno will not head into the bathing area. She'll instead stand in front of the refrigerator in the woman's changing area and ask for milk as there is none in the fridge.

* The eighth customer is a man in a blue buttoned-down shirt. He questions on why Maina is here, and he believes someone who looks like they never been out in society do a maintenance job like this. Before heading to the bathing area, he wishes for Maina to struggle further with her job.

When Maina goes over to check on the man, she notices a figure hiding underneath the table. But upon getting closer to it, the figure quickly hides within the table.

  • The man will unfortunately attempt to commit suicide by drowning in the tub. You need to interact with him again to prevent him from doing so. After stopping him, he will leave.

The ninth and final customer is a pale woman. Upon grabbing her items, Maina takes notice for a brief second that the woman's appearance and demeanor quickly changes. As she has her arms outstretch and has a younger and frightening appearance! But the woman quickly shifts back to what she was before. After giving the woman her item(s), she mutters to Maina about something bad in the depth of the bathhouse. But before Maina can question about it, the woman quickly makes her way to the bathing area without saying anything else.

But upon checking on her, Maina notices that she is pregnant, and when she enters the bathing area, she will stare blankly at one of the showers while standing there. When Maina decides to head back to the reception desk, she hears the sounds of a crying baby. Signifying that the woman has given birth within the bathhouse. Maina heads over to where the woman is, and discovers her, holding her newborn baby with blood splatter all over the floor. The woman gets angry and claims its "his fault" and questions why "he" would do such a thing. The woman then remains silent before telling Maina that she was almost pulled by "her" before leaving the place.

When she leaves, Maina will have to wipe the floor from all the blood left on there.

Once the pale woman leaves, the closing music plays, and the landlord comes in to tell Maina how well she did. After that, he tells Maina to clean the mirrors in the bathing area before she takes her bath. After the landlord leaves, Maina immediately gets to work and gets the job done without issues. When finished, Maina goes over to take her shower. But during the middle of it, Maina hears a strange noise coming from somewhere in the bathhouse. But when she looks up, she doesn't see anything that could have made that noise. After cleaning herself, Maina decides to go to the sauna as she doesn't want to take a bath due to the paranormal occurrence that happened yesterday.

While in the sauna, you will have to play a minigame in order to help Maina from leaving the sauna pre-maturely. You will be presented with a display of arrow keys in which you must hold the buttons all at once. (But only the first two that display, and it must be in order). After a few seconds, one of the buttons will disappear and will be replaced with a new one to which you will have to hold for that one instead. If you don't press the buttons fast enough, skip to a different button without handling ones that displayed earlier, or miss too many button prompts, Maina will leave the sauna, and you will have to complete the objective again. If you're having trouble completing the mini game, the game will offer you to skip it and move on with the game. But while performing the game, a woman is seen walking around the bathhouse through the fogged door.

After successfully completing the mini-game, Maina will leave the sauna and will decide to take a bath (despite saying she didn't want to do so earlier). After a cooldown, Maina will go back to the sauna again and relax once more. You will play the same mini game as before, but this time, you will have to hold down either the left mouse or right mouse button as well. After successfully completing the mini game again, Maina will head to the bath to cool down again before going back into the sauna for a third time where you'll play the same game. But while bathing in the sauna for the third time, a large hand will unexpectedly appear and grabs Maina's face and pulls her head to the right. The screen will turn black for a second before showing the figure who grabbed Maina, (revealed to be a woman with a black dress), quickly crawling away from the sauna in a blink of an eye. Maina hurriedly leaves the sauna and checks to see where the woman is, but she is unable to find any trace of her. Having enough of this, Maina decides to leave the bathing area. But all of a sudden, she hears the screams from Matsuno from the locker area as she is still complaining on how there is no milk in the fridge. When Maina goes over to comfort her, a mysterious old woman with long gray hair, wearing a black raincoat that covers a part of her face comes over for an unexpected visit. This woman is Umeki, the owner of a nearby supermarket down the street from the bathhouse. She offers to give Maina some milk, but she will have to pick it up from her store.

Visiting the supermarket[]

Maina heads over to the supermarket with Umeki to pick up the milk. Upon arrival, Maina tries to have a small conversation with the mysterious woman. But Umeki makes an interesting gesture by leaning forward at Maina to get a better look at her face. She comments on Maina's eyes as believes she has seen them before, but she laughs it off before she can finish her sentence as she most likely doesn't want Maina questioning it. Getting back on track, Umeki tells Maina that she can have the milk from the store. However, before she can give her the milk, she wants Maina to unload the products within the 4 cardboard boxes and stock them on the shelves.

Each box will appear one by one, and you will be required to place a total of 4 items on each of the shelves within the middle of the store. You will have to place the items within the proper place and the proper position.

Below is a guide of the button prompts that you'll be pressing during the mini game:

  • Left click mouse button - Grab the item
  • Holding the "R" button and rotating the mouse - Rotate the item
  • "C" button - Crouch

After you complete a box, Umeki will give you the next one and you will repeat the process a total of four times. Some items will be easy to place, while others will require you to look carefully at the other items in order to see how they are placed. Once completed, Umeki will give Maina the crate of milk as promised. But before Maina leaves, Umeki tells her that she looks like the previous caretaker of the bathhouse 20 years prior. She claims that she knows about the curse of the bathhouse and that Maina is being targeted by an entity that is much stronger than a curse or a vengeful spirit. Mainly because she's been living in the town for a long time and knows a thing or two about the place. But Umeki notices that the curse isn't taking too much effect on Maina and that there must be a reason why. Before she leaves, Umeki decides to give Maina a Kokeshi doll to protect her.

Before leaving the shop, Maina notices a target practice arena at the back of the store. And you can decide on whether you want to play the game or not. If you do, you will be able to play 3 different versions of the game of your choice.

  • Vers. A (Easy) - Knock down 70 targets.
  • Vers. B (Medium) - Knock down 53 targets.
  • Vers. C (Hard) - Knock down 83 targets.

You will be given 1:40 on the clock to shoot as many targets as possible within the time limit. Make sure to NOT hit the purple chinchilla's, as you will lose points if you end up shooting them. At the end of the game, (whether you shoot all the targets in the time limit or not), you will see on the white board your score for that game.

Here are the button prompts that you will press during the game:

  • Left Mouse Click - Fire
  • Right Mouse Click - Aim down sight.

While it is not necessary to get a perfect score, but if you manage to do so on all three versions, you will be able to get an achievement. Not only that, but you can also come in anytime to play it whenever you feel like it.

Now with the milk in her possession, Maina leaves the shop and heads back to the bathhouse. After rearranging the milk in the fridge, Maina goes over to Matsuno to give her one. However, Matsuno went berserk on Maina as she lashes out at her and grabs her hand after noticing that Maina has her daughter's bracelet and attempts to grab it back. After screaming her daughter's name (Yoko), the lights in the bathhouse turn off before turning back on. Only to reveal that Matsuno is no longer standing in front of her but instead frantically looking through the shelves of the towel stand. When Maina goes over to talk to her, the lights turn off again as Matsuno quickly teleports to the shelves and continues searching there as she begins to cry. As the tension continues to grow, Matsuno teleports once more when Maina goes over to comfort her, now searching underneath a wooden bench as she begins to wail. But when Maina goes over to her again, she completely disappears, leaving Maina alone within the changing area. Then, without warning, a paranormal event occurs within the bathhouse as the lights rapidly flickering as multiple objects within the changing area fly all over the place. On the table, Matsuno is lying flat on the middle as she is restraint due to a giant lock of hair completely covering and grabbing her entire body. As the lights continue to flicker, she violently thrashes around on the table before teleporting in front of Maina's face as she shrills extremely loud while continuing to shake violently. Eventually, the screen cuts to black for a second as the paranormal event comes to a stop, before showing Maina collapsing on the floor and blacking out. Just before she falls on the floor, she notices that Matsuno is still in front of her but is now bending down while silently crying. The landlord was also seen standing behind Matsuno as he arrives just in time to witness what had just happen.

After some time, Maina regains consciousness, and is now lying on the table with the landlord sitting beside her. He is grateful that Maina had woken up as he thought that she died. However, the landlord claims that it will be troublesome if something did happen to her as she "can't die now". This remark confuses Maina, and she questions the landlord on what he means by that. To which he tells her to not think highly of what he just said, and what he meant was that it would be bad if he simply lost an employee. Still confused on what happened earlier, Maina tells the landlord that she believes that the bathhouse is cursed and hopes that he would believe her as he witnessed what just happened before she collapsed. However, the landlord doesn't believe her but apologizes to Maina for what happened as he believes that Maina is overwhelmed with stress due to all the hard work she has put up to. He tells Maina that while he does understand on what she's going through but encourages her to continue working as normal. After that, Maina goes home without any more incidents.

Day 4[]

The next day, Maina is in her apartment lying on her futon as she starts having doubts over whether taking the job opportunity was ever a good idea. Thinking about it for a little bit, Maina decides that she can no longer handle working at the bathhouse and decides that she will quit. Suddenly, there's a knock at her apartment door. Maina initially believes that its the landlord again and wishes that she doesn't have to talk to him anymore. Begrudgingly, Maina gets up and goes over to the door to answer it. But to her surprise, it wasn't the landlord who was knocking, it was the priest. He tells Maina that he has very important information to tell her.

Down in the basement of the bathhouse, there's a hidden room within the boiler room. If she can find it, Maina will learn more about the secrets of the bathhouse, and why things are happening the way they are. The priest also gives a fair warning to Maina. When she enters the bathhouse, make sure to stay out of the landlord's sight, and try her best not to be seen or heard. After giving these instructions, the priest leaves.

Curious to know what has been happening with her. Maina leaves her apartment and heads to the bathhouse so she can put a stop to this once and for all. But just as Maina walks out into the street, she runs into Toru again, who asks her if she has any information about his long-lost twin sister. But Maina tells him that she hasn't that much luck. A little disappointed, Toru then asks out of curiosity for her name. From here, Maina has three options to tell him.

  • It's Maina
  • ... (Say nothing)
  • It's Erena

Depending on the choice you make, will ultimately decide the ending of the game.

Endings[]

*Unlike in previous Chilla's Art games, you will have to play the game two more times after your first playthrough in order to unlock the other endings. (As only the first and second options are accessible during the first time you play, and the last option is in red and cannot be selected). You will also have to complete specific tasks and requirements in order to get the endings. After completing an ending, you can access a certain day within the home screen so you can jump to that specific day and complete any objectives you may have missed. Eventually, when you meet Toru again, the third option that was originally blocked out will now become accessible.*

Ending 1 (Bad Ending)[]

If you choose either the first or second option, the outcome will be the same. If you tell him that your name is Maina, Toru will complement her name before heading back to his apartment. If you don't say anything to him, Toru will simply leave. As Maina walks down the street to the bathhouse, she takes notice of a strange looking man pulling a rickshaw while shouting and singing an eerie tune. Turns out, it's a sweet potato salesman named Imojiro. (While its optional to talk to him for this ending. But in the third ending, you will have to talk to him). Deciding to ignore him, Maina heads into the bathhouse and prepares herself to face against the landlord.

Getting pass the landlord:[]

In order to get to the boiler room, you will need to enter through the men's bathing area as the door on the women's side is locked. However, because the landlord is bathing there, you will have to distract him as he will consistently be on the move within the room. The best way to get past the landlord is to ring the bell on the counter and quickly run into the bathroom within the changing area. From there, the landlord will quickly head to the entrance to investigate the noise, giving you enough time to make it to the boiler room

Now in the boiler room, Maina notices a stack of cardboard boxes on the left side of the room and starts moving them aside. Once done, Maina then moves aside a large sheet of corrugated iron, revealing the hidden door to the basement. Walking down the long flight of stairs, Maina discovers that at the bottom of the stairwell is another room where it seemed as if someone was held captive before. In the room, is a mirror, a small toilet, chained shackles, and a small bed. Upon investigating the room, Maina discovers that there is something inside the pillow as she hears something ringing when she picks it up. However, she needs something in order to open up the pillow. Looking around the room some more, Maina notices a partially cracked section of the wall next to the bed. Pulling off the stones from the wall, she finds a rusted pair of shears to which she uses it to cut open the pillow, revealing a small handwritten note from the person who was held captive there.

The note reads:

"It moved
In my belly
It is alive, even in this situation
I will not let you die no matter what
I promise to protect you
My beloved baby
I will do my best, so do your best too
I'm sorry
I will not let them do as they please."

After reading the note, the priest finally arrives at the basement and tells Maina about the secret. A long time ago, the landlord fell in love with a woman from the village. He grew madly obsessed with the woman to the point that he decided to imprison her in the basement of the bathhouse. Unbeknownst to the landlord, the woman was pregnant and eventually gave birth to a pair of twins. Sadly, the woman died from blood loss shortly after. Distraught by this, the landlord quickly went to the priest for assistance, who decided to take custody of the twins for the time being. Before giving the twins away to an orphanage, he decided to name the twins: "Toru" and "Erena". (Meaning that Maina's real name is Erena, and she is the long-lost sister that Toru has been looking for)! The priest reveals that the name of the woman was named "Yoko", (the daughter of Matsuno), and without ever realizing this, Erena has returned back to the village in which she never knew she ever been too before. The priest apologizes to Erena for not telling her sooner, but he knew it was her once he took notice of her working at the bathhouse. Continuing with the story, the priest explains that after Yoko's passing, she became a vengeful spirit called an "Ubume", (A yokai or a spirit of a woman who has died during childbirth), and started to haunt the landlord from that day forward. The only way to put an end to the curse is for the landlord to burn the Ubume's child to death as soon as that child reaches the same age in which they died. Yoko died at the age of 24, and Erena is 24 as well. So, tonight is the night in which the landlord will carry out his plan. The priest had already informed Toru about the situation, and he agrees to help end the curse, having known about it for some time.

Fitting the other pieces of the puzzle together, we now understand some additional key parts that were hinted throughout the game. The reason why Erena received a call from the landlord for a job offer at the bathhouse because that was the only way for him to lure Erena back to the village. (Hence why he also told Erena that it was good that she didn't die from the paranormal encounter. Because if she did, then the curse can no longer be broken). And when the priest informed Toru to help out, the landlord didn't want him interfering with the plan and put wanted flyers around town in order to discourage him from going out much.

Before leaving, the priest advises Erena to leave the place before the landlord catches her. Listening to the priest's instructions, Erena makes her way back upstairs to the men's bathing area. But just when she was about to leave, Erena notices that the pool on the very left wall is bubbling. Curiosity getting the better of her, Erena goes over to the pool to see what is going on. Then without warning, the Ubume attacks her and pulls Erena into the water and drags her to its realm. Within the realm, the entire building is red, with black hair and arms dangling from the ceiling and the room is remarkably grimier.

On the wall, there is a timer displayed, in which after a few seconds, the time will start counting down from 1:30. Then, Japanese kanji will appear within the bathhouse, with the Ubume trying to emerge from them. From here on, Erena will have to prevent the vengeful spirit of Yoko from escaping. Whenever a character appears within the bathhouse, you will have to quickly clean out the symbol before the Ubume emerges out of it. If you fail to do so in time, the Ubume will kill Erena, and you will have to replay the stage again. You will be doing this process periodically, as you will go through three different stages while trying to stop the Ubume. As the stage progresses, you will have to perform additional tasks in order to clean out the characters. Additionally, the areas in which you must clean will change per stage and the timer will reset to 1:30.

  • During the first stage, you will have to mop the pools. As the level progresses, the faucets will turn on, and you will have to stop them before they fill up. Additionally, after you stop a faucet from running, you may have to also clean out a character within the pool as it may contain one.
  • During the second stage, you will have to scrub the walls. As the level progresses, the Japanese kanji will darken, and you will be required to spray the character before scrubbing it out.
  • During the third stage, you will have to spray the mirrors and floor tiles with the shower heads. As the level progresses, you will have to change the water temperature of the shower before you spray the shower heads on the mirrors. (Only the mirrors).

After completing the daunting tasks, Erena is finally able to leave the bathing area and leave the bathhouse. But when she arrives at the entrance, she takes notice that the area is filled with water and has now formed into a lake. To make matters worse, is when she tries to leave by walking through the water, the Ubume launches out from the water and attacks her before dragging her back to the real world. This unfortunately alerts the landlord, and he immediately starts chasing after her in an attempt to capture and sacrifice her too the Ubume. Erena makes it back to the apartment just in time, but the landlord starts pounding on the door and proceeds to make several attempts to open the door to her apartment. And when that didn't work, the landlord then uses his keys to try and unlock her door. But that's when the hole within Erena's apartment starts to grow a long strand of hair, that quickly latches onto the door to form a blockage. (Indicating that Yoko's spirit is attempting to help her daughter out). Unfortunately, this attempt was proven futile, as the landlord successfully makes his way into the apartment just as the power goes off. Then, he quickly charges at Erena and attacks her, knocking her unconscious.

After waking up, Erena is then dragged by the landlord back to the bathhouse. Where he takes her down to the boiler room and stuffs Erena into one of the boilers and burns her alive. Allowing the landlord to be freed from the curse. The last thing Erena hears as she is burned alive is the sound of her mother's demonic screams.

Ending 2 (Neutral Ending)[]

In this ending, you will have to talk to Toru again. You are again given a choice of three. You need to click on the third option, thereby revealing her real name for Toru. He will say that it is very important that she is his sister and later he tells her to come to his apartment. Afterwards you go to the bathhouse again and the same thing happens.

After you escape from the hands of the landlord, run out of the bathhouse and run to Toru's apartment. However, the landlord will immediately catch you and then drag you back to the bathhouse in the boiler room.

We are shown that the landlord is ready to burn Maina alive, but she is saved by Toru, her brother. He burns the landlord and later saves Maina. He later appears to her and says that he is very glad that he found his sister apologizing for not being able to help in time. Later he begins to understand that Ubume, their mother is still not freed. Toru heads to the bathhouse which starts to burn down and later we see that Toru decides to burn himself in the building thus ending the curse which Erena witnesses.

Later the police arrive and help Maina. Then a cut scene appears where we see a bathhouse burnt to the ground.

Ending 3 (True Ending)[]

you have to shoot and complete everything on the shooting range to get one million yen so you can buy the big statue and you hit the landlord in the head with it, and he dies,, and you all dance
